As the oral skill of English, speaking takes the essential position in communication. Because of it, the students who are performing speaking must be able to present speaking skills such as pronunciation, intonation, stress, and juncture in a well form, in order to make the communication can run effectively. But in the reality, students who communicate in English often produce error in their speaking performance. Therefore, the researcher conducts this research based on this concept of Error Analysis on Students’ Speaking Performances of the tenth grade at SMA N 1 Sambit Ponorogo.
The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds of errors on students’ speaking performances and to analyze those on students’ speaking performances of the tenth grade at SMAN 1 Sambit Ponorogo in academic year 2018/2019.
This research applied case study of qualitative research. The subject of this research was tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Sambit Ponorogo. The researcher used observation, documentation, and interview to collect the data. To analyze the data, the researcher used typology technique to compared what the students actually said with what the students ought to say.
The result of this research showed that errors in speaking skill performance occurred in pronunciation, intonation, stress, and juncture. There were 170 errors of pronunciation such as omission 45 errors, addition 29 errors, misformation 95 errors, and misordering 1 error. There were also 30 errors of intonation and they only categorized in 27 misformation errors and 3 misordering errors. In stressing word, there were 41 errors but the errors were categorized in only one that was misordering. And in juncture, there were 10 errors and those were also categorized only in misordering. Meanwhile, there were two causes of error. They were L1 interference or negative influence of students’ mother tongue and developmental error or incorrect rules that students used.
It can be concluded that students have made speaking performance error within their videos such as four kinds of pronunciation, two kinds of intonation, and one kind of stress and also juncture. There are two possible causes of those errors, such L1 interference and developmental error. Because of that, it is important for the students to improve their ability in speaking skill by listening native speaker and practice speaking more.
