Reading is essential. It is process by which gain information and ideas from books, newspapers, manual, letters, contracts advertisements and a host of other materials. Motivation plays an important role in the development of social skills facilitation of interaction between peers STAD method can be used as an alternative method for teaching reading at SMP, and it could make students more active in interacting with their friends to solve kind of problems or students centered in teaching learning process. It is clear that motivation and method has important role to play in reading development.
This study tries to measure the effectiveness of STAD method toward students’ motivation in reading comprehension at SMPN 2 PONOROGO. The statement of the problem is “Do the seventh grade of SMPN 2 PONOROGO have higher motivation in reading comprehension before and after taught using STAD method?”.
The research applied quantitative approach and used a pre experimental design. The population of this research was the whole students of VII class consisted of 270 students of SMPN 2 Ponorogo in academic year 2019/2020 and the sample was VIIC that consisted of 32 students. The research were taken as the sample using sample random sampling. The data were collected using test. To analyze data, the researcher used the formula “t” test as procedure of data analysis.
The result of this research showed that the value of (t0) between students’ motivation in reading comprehension before and after taught using Students Team Achievement Division (STAD) method is 4,96 (t0) and the t-table (tt) is 2.04. From the data above, the researcher interpret that there was significance difference because t0>tt, so Ha was accepted. Concludes that there was significant difference student motivation in reading comprehension before and after taught using Students Team Achievement Division (STAD) method. In other word, Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method is effective to be used in teaching reading at the seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Ponorogo in academic year 2019/2020.
