Vocabulary is one of the essential language components that must be taught to students in the English learning process. Therefore, it is necessary to apply teaching strategies suitable to the characteristics of students, the classroom environment, the learning objectives, and the current conditions, especially in teaching vocabulary at MTsN 1 Ponorogo, where in the madrasa, the researcher found that the learning process went very well. It is crucial to analyze teachers’ strategies for teaching vocabulary in the teaching and learning process.
This study aims to describe the English teacher’s strategies in teaching English vocabulary in seventh grade A at MTsN 1 Ponorogo, then, identifying the teacher’s problems in implementing teaching strategies. Furthermore, the researcher explores the teacher’s efforts in overcoming the problems.
The researcher used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design to answer the problems above in this research. This research was conducted at MTsN 1 Ponorogo in the academic year 2022/2023. The subject of this research was an English teacher and several students in seventh-grade A at MTsN 1 Ponorogo as support. The researcher used data collection techniques through observations, interviews, and documentation. Then, the data results were analyzed using Mattew B. Miles and Michael Huerman’s three steps: data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions or verification.
The result of this research showed that there were five strategies used by the English teacher in teaching English vocabulary. The strategies are used learner training, mnemonics, dictionaries, spelling rules, and motivation. There were some problems faced in teaching vocabulary, namely limited teaching time, not all students have dictionaries or carry dictionaries, students do not know how to use dictionaries, students do not know how to pronounce and spell a word. To face the problems, the teacher of MTsN 1 Ponorogo had some efforts, such as give homework assignments so students can also study at home. Then when there is free time, the teacher also teaches students how to use a dictionary properly and correctly, such as finding a word by looking for it in alphabetical order and inviting students to go to the library to use the dictionary. Besides that, the teacher also teaches how to pronoun and spell a word properly and correctly. The values obtained from this research is that the research results of this research will not be the same as other researcher, so it can later be used as guidelines or new references regarding vocabulary teaching strategies in the future. It can be seen from the difference between this research and previous research that in this research the use or the number of subject, the level of school, the method and research design, and data collection were different in this research.
