Bilingual society is aware of it or not will often make language switching, this event is called code-switching. Code-switching is a linguistic event that is closely related to sociolinguistics and is a common phenomenon in bilingual or multilingual societies. Besides code-switching, the community also conducts code-mixing events. Code-mixing is mixing the use of other languages to expand language style or a variety of languages, use of words, clauses, and so on. Code-switching and code-mixing are one aspects of language dependence in a bilingual society.
The importance of the research is aimed to enhance students and committee knowledge about kind of code-switching and code-mixing. It can raise language awareness among committee and students in Islamic Boarding school. Besides, it also tells the factor that can influence code-switching and code-mixing.
The subject was analyzed using a descriptive qualitative methodology. Qualitative research is a method for investigating and comprehending the significance that people or groups attribute to a social or human situation. Because it provides a full explanation of code-switching and code-mixing, it is the most relevant one to examine and acceptable for this study. In the broadest sense, qualitative research is a study that generates descriptive data. In the description, the phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing at Islamic Boarding School As-Sa'idiyyah 2 must be studied.
The study revealed that committee members and students engaged in code-switching and code-mixing. In their daily conversation, code-mixing occurred 58% more often than code-switching, which occurred 42% of the time. With each kind of code-switching, tag code-switching was 36%, 50% intra-sentential, and 14% inter-sentential, while among the categories of code-mixing, insertion was 52%, alternation was 39%, and congruent lexicalization was 9%. As for the results of the factors causing code-switching and code-mixing, the researcher found six factors, namely talking a particular topic, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors, to soften or strength request or command.
