Abstract

Transitivity system deals with participant’s experience has close related to the text. It contains the three constituent called processes, participants, and circumtantial which constructs the different meaning in the different clause. The transitivity processes types realized by a group of verbs as the part of gramatical structure of the text. So, it can not be separated from the educational field especially on linguistic class for enhacing the knowledge and becoming fundamental theory to understand the content of the text. Finally, the transitivity system is important in the educational field, especially for the teachers and students.
This research aims : 1) To identify the transitivity process and participant functions found on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets novel, 2) To identify the dominant transitivity participants found on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets novel.
Descriptive qualitative is the research method that implemented by the researcher. The data is gained from is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets novel and analyzed by transitivity system to analyze the types of transitivity process and its participant functions, and also the dominant participant on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The result of this research are following: 1) there are 6.970 data of transitivity processes in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secets novel that divided into material process (37,7%), mental process (19,0%), behavioural process (3,4%), verbal process (25,9%), existential process (2,0%), relational process (11,9%), and meteorological process (0,1%). Futhermore, there are 12.829 data of participants function which distributed into actor (20,50%), goal (10,70%), range (1,80%), recipient (0,40%), client (1,05%), senser (10,40%), phenomenon (9,50%), behaver (1,90%), behaviour (1,00%), sayer (14,05%), receiver (1,50%), verbiage (13,10%), existent (1,10%), carier (6,25%), atrribute (6,05%), agent (0,05%), token (0,33%), and value (0,32%), 2) the dominant character of the participant function in this novel is Harry Potter which has 34,54% of occurance.
