Abstract

Speaking skill is an important skill in English language especially in communication to other. In English language learning speaking skill important skill to communication to other in class. But in fact, students are still have difficulty on their Speaking skill. The storytelling technique provides a different experience that will be felt by a student, a student will learn to speak without the need to feel depressed and forced to do. Storytelling as a technique of teaching is used in teaching English.
The purpose of this research was to examine whether there was significant difference score between students who were taught by Storytelling technique and students who are not taught by Storytelling of the nine grade students at SMPN 4 Ponorogo.
This research applied quantitative approach and used quasi-experimental design. This research, used two classes as experimental group and control group. The researcher conducted a research at SMPN 4 Ponorogo of the nine grade students. The number of the sample in this research were 32 students of experiment class and control class. The procedure of data collection were test and documentation.
To analysis it, used t-test by using SPSS 20 version to know whether there was significant difference score between students who were taught by Storytelling technique and students who are not taught by Storytelling of the nine grade students at SMPN 4 Ponorogo. The result of the research showed that sig.(2-tailed)<0,05. It means that the value smaller than 0.05, 0.000 = (2-tailed) < 0.05. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference score in student speaking skill for the students who were taught by storytelling and who were not taught by storytelling. Based on the explanation above, the researcher conclude that Storytelling technique is effective to improve student speaking skill of the nine grade students at SMPN 4 Ponorogo.
