English language is a language that needs to be studied by students by the reasons of its use in the future either for their educational or commercial purposes. In English language, there are three vital components that used as framework or foundation of English language and one of them is vocabulary. Vocabulary is a bridge that connecting the concept from native language to foreign language. In this case, pictures and texts have contribution as tools and strategy in teaching and learning vocabulary.
This research is conducted because some students still don’t understand with the importance of English language for their future purposes. So, hopefully when the teacher teaches by using appropriate activity, it will help the learning process of their students.
The objective of this study were to describe 1) the use of pictures and texts can be useful in teaching English vocabulary and 2) to describe the students’ responses on the use of pictures and texts in teaching vocabulary at 7th grade students of MTs Darul Huda Mayak Ponorogo in academic year 2019/2020.
This research using qualitative approach with the type is case study. This research was using interview, observation and documentation as data collecting method. This research location was at MTs Darul Huda Mayak Ponorogo in academic year 2019/2020. The objects of this research are 7th grade male students who taught using pictures and texts by their teacher. in this research, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification activity were used to analysis the data.
The activity of pictures and texts in teaching English vocabulary for seventh grade students are in the following steps: 1) teacher gave instruction to divide the classroom into 4 groups, each group were divided into two 2) teacher gave cards to each divided group some cards, one brought picture cards and another brought text cards 3) teacher gave instruction to the students who brought picture cards to raised one of their cards 4) another students who brought text cards looked the matched cards related to the card that their friend have been raised. 5) when the students gave wrong answer the teacher gave a sign to correct their answer.
In conclusion, as the result of the research, pictures and texts activity was appropriate to use in teaching English vocabulary at seventh grade students of MTs Darul Huda Mayak Ponorogo in academic year 2019/2020 and students who were taught by pictures and texts gave good and positive responses.
