Abstract

In bilingual digital communication, code-switching and code-mixing
frequently appear as natural language practices, especially in online media such as
YouTube, where speakers address diverse audiences. However, studies examining
how these practices function as comprehensible input for EFL learners’ speaking
development remain limited. Therefore, this study explores the occurrence of code
switching and code-mixing in selected videos from Maudy Ayunda’s YouTube
channel and examines their role as comprehensible input for EFL learners’ speaking
practices.
The objectives of this research are to identify the types of code-switching
and code-mixing used in the selected videos, to analyze how these practices
function as comprehensible input, and to explore students’ perceptions of their role
in supporting speaking practices.
This study employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected
through video collection and transcription, classroom observations, and semi
structured interviews. The videos were analyzed using Poplack’s (1980)
classification of code-switching and Muysken’s (2000) classification of code
mixing. The participants were four university students selected through preliminary
screening using a Google Form and classroom observations based on their speaking
participation and familiarity with Maudy Ayunda’s YouTube channel.
The findings show that intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag-switching
appear in the videos, with intra-sentential switching as the most frequent. For code
mixing, insertion is the most dominant form, followed by alternation, while
congruent lexicalization occurs rarely. Classroom observations indicate that
bilingual language presentation provides comprehensible input that helps students
understand content and encourages them to use English expressions. Interview
results reveal that students perceive these practices as helpful in improving
comprehension, enriching vocabulary, and increasing confidence in speaking.
Overall, bilingual YouTube content with code-switching and code-mixing can serve
as comprehensible input for supporting EFL learners’ speaking practices.
