Abstract

Transitivity is a powerful tool for analyzing the meanings and experiences expressed whether in utterances and sentences through spoken text. Speech is one-way communication used to convey ideas, opinions, or thoughts to a large audience. Natalie Portman delivered a speech about self-doubt to make the audience can turn self-doubt into strength and recognize one‟s abilities to achieve success in their way.
This research analyzed the transitivity process used by Natalie Portman‟s Harvard Commentary Speech 2015. The researcher interpreted the experience revealed from the transitivity processes used by Natalie Portman in her speech by using Halliday and Sarah Anderson‟s theories.
The researcher used descriptive-qualitative method in doing this research. The data were taken from the script of Natalie Portman‟s Harvard Commentary Speech 2015 which consists of transitivity process. The researcher used documentary techniques to collect the data and content analysis was applied to analyze the data.
The researcher found there are 132 utterances of transitivity processes that were classified into four types of sentences and those sentences can be identified to the transitivity processes such as material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal, and existential. The transitivity processes based on the types of sentence divided into 75 utterances of simple sentence, 23 utterances of compound sentence, 19 utterances of complex sentence, and 14 utterances of compound-complex sentence. Meanwhile, the transitivity process that occurs in Natalie Portman‟s Harvard Commentary Speech 2015 can be identified as material process is used to talk about Natalie Portman‟s struggle in the past, her career, her popularity, her self-doubt and the actions she demands from the audiences. Mental process is used to talk about her feelings about the events or problems that occur in her life. Relational process is used to give positive and negative attributes to Natalie, Natalie‟s life, Natalie‟s self-doubt, and her achievement. Behavioral process is used to talk about the people exacerbates Natalie‟s and other‟s self-doubt. Verbal process is used to talk about how people and Natalie convinced herself that she was worthy and deserve the hard work and success. Existential process is used to talk about how to convince her-self that her existence has a reason and to convince her and Harvard graduates not to doubt themselves anymore. This research is expected to make the student more enthusiastic and enjoy the leaning grammar process. Moreover, the researcher gives a suggestion to the next researcher to explore the other types of transitivity process, theory, and genre of the object. As a modern grammar analysis, transitivity is expected to analyze the language in depth and clear analysis. The result of the research about transitivity is also expected to grow the critical thinking of the students and the lectures about systemic functional linguistics, especially focuses on transitivity.
