Mathematical understanding in mathematics education is a very important ability in learning and must be possessed by students. However, the fact shows that students' mathematical understanding ability is relatively low. Some of the causes are that in learning activities, teachers still use conventional teaching models (lectures), where the material is delivered by the teacher directly to the students, making it tend to be difficult for students to understand, and the teacher only provides abstract explanations, without involving the real world of the students. To address this issue, the researcher conducted a study on mathematics education using the Contextual Teaching and Learning model. (CTL).
This research aims to determine students' mathematical understanding abilities using the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model and the influence of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model assisted by smart board media on students' mathematical understanding abilities.
This research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. Data collection techniques using tests and observations. The sampling was conducted using the total sampling type of non-probability sampling technique. The sample of this study is class II A as the control class and class II B as the experimental class. The hypothesis test in the research is the Independent Samples Test.
The research results are as follows: (1) There is a mathematical understanding ability of students using the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model, with students achieving a high score of 95 with an average of 15%. This means that students have a very good potential for mathematical understanding ability. (2) There is an influence of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model assisted by smart board media on mathematical understanding ability. This is based on the hypothesis test results using the Independent Sample t-Test, which yielded a sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.00, meaning there is a significant influence on students' mathematical understanding between those applying the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model with smart boards in the experimental class and the control class. The research results show a difference in students' mathematical understanding between the experimental and control classes, between those using the conventional model and Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL).
