Abstract
This research analyzes Comparative Figurative Language in poetry Sparks of Phoenix by
Najwa Zebian. This research is a literature study with a source of poetry’s book Sparks of Phoenix.
A figurative language is a way to shed creative ideas of the author that could raise imagination,
generate their thoughts, feelings and evoke its own sensation for readers and listeners. A poetry
cannot escape from figurative language, imagination, and symbolism or style of language.
Figurative language has several groups, namely comparison, contradiction, and linkage. From the
three groups, the author will be describe the comparative figurative language. This research is a
literature study with a source of poetry’s book Sparks of Phoenix
The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the type of comparative figurative
language which is found in poetry Sparks of Phoenix, then analyze the meaning in every use of
language style which is used in poetry Sparks of Phoenix.
This study itself used a qualitative research approach and this research used library research
because the researcher studies about the poetry “Sparks of Phoenix” by Najwa Zebian. The
techniques used in data gathering in this research are reading technique, taking notes and analyzing.
The instrument of this research is the research itself which is the main data gathering and data
analysis tool and the steps are: (1) reading and identifying the whole poetry’s book “Sparks of
Phoenix” chapter I, (2) understanding book to find the comparative figurative language, (3)
counting the number of phrase that have been identified, (4) analyzing the meaning of comparative
figurative language in the book, (5) making conclusion.
Based on the data contained in the poetry entitled Sparks of Phoenix by Najwa Zebian,
there were 33 stylistic comparative language that can be divided into six types: depersonification
(4), personification (5), simile (3), metaphor (8), sarcasm (9), and allegory (4). The result of
analysis and discussion conducted shows 2 important things. First, they are 6 out of 10 types of
comparative figurative language in the theory, they are: depersonification, personification, simile,
metaphor, allegory, and sarcasm. Second, the meaning which is intentionally showed through
every language style in comparative figurative language is various, adjusted with sentence context.
The purpose of presenting the meaning is to make the literature readers understand every used
language style.
