Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is very important for someone in communicating because the more vocabulary have, the easier it will be to convey the content of their thoughts. Therefore, improving students' vocabulary mastery at school is very important and it can be done by using methods and games. One of the methods and games that can be used is Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and Word Search Puzzle.
This research has an objective. It is to determine whether students who are taught by using Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and Word Search Puzzle have better vocabulary mastery than those who are not taught by using Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and Word Search Puzzle.
This research used quantitative research method with quasi-experimental design. There are two classes used in this study, namely the experimental class and the control class. The population is 175 students of SMA Bakti Ponorogo. The samples were 30 students. The data collection procedures in this study used pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data using independent sample t-test.
The results obtained from this study indicate that using Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and Word Search Puzzle can improve students' vocabulary mastery. It was shown by the results in the experimental class had an average pre-test of 66.33 and an average post-test of 79, while the results in the control class had an average pre-test of 69.33 and an average post-test of 71.67. The test results show that t_test (2.442) is greater than t_table (2.048). It shows that H_0 is rejected and H_1 is accepted. Thus, there is significant difference between students who are taught by using Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and Word Search Puzzle than those who are not taught by using Teams Games Tournament (TGT) and Word Search Puzzle. Thus, implementing these techniques and activities enhanced students' mastery in vocabulary. The results show that the effect size is large at 0.902.
