Abstract

Learning is a process of acquiring new knowledge and information. By learning someone will get new insights that they have never had before. One of the learning processes at school that students need to do is learning English. English is one of the international languages commonly used by everyone in the world. In learning English, motivation is one of the most important things needed. Motivation becomes the main point of students' willingness to learn English. During the second internship at SMA BAKTI Ponorogo, the researcher found that there are two types of students who attend the school. The two types are boarding school students and day school students. Where during English learning activities, boarding school students pay close attention to the teacher's explanation of the material and day school students pay less attention to the teacher's explanation of the material. However, during the questions and answer session regarding the material, boarding school students were less able to answer the questions given by the teacher and day school students were more fluent and confident in answering them.
This research aims to find out whether there is a significant difference in motivation between boarding school and day school students in learning English at SMA BAKTI Ponorogo. The statement of the problem in this research is whether there is a significant difference in motivation between boarding school and day school students in learning English at SMA BAKTI Ponorogo. The importance of this research is that it can provide useful information for English teachers, especially in increasing motivation to learn English.
This research was designed using a quantitative method with a comparative analysis design. The data collection process was carried out using a Google Form-based questionnaire. The research participants came from students in classes X, XI Science, XI Social, XII Science, and XII Social at SMA BAKTI Ponorogo who were randomly selected. The research data that has been obtained is then analyzed with an independent t-test, with the help of the SPSS program and Microsoft Excel.
From the results of data analysis, the research results obtained there is no significant different of English learning motivation between boarding school students and day school students. This is because related to the selection of schools between students who live in the boarding school and day school students, depending on the preferences of the parents of students not from the willingness of the students themselves. Therefore, curriculum used between the two types of students is the same and students who live in the boarding school also do not have additional classes or materials related to English.
