Abstract
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a approach to deal with language instructing that stresses correspondence as the principal objective of learning. This approach places a learning emphasis on student interaction as the ultimate goal of learning. In this approach, students are also focused on learning language by having actual social interactions, such as conversations, presentations and discussions.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a significant difference exists in improving the speaking ability of students in class XI who were taught with CLT approach at SMAN 1 Jetis Ponorogo. Moreover, the meaning of the research was ecpected to be helpful data for English educators, particularly in speaking ability. Additionally, it can be utilized as a CLT approach to influence the speaking ability.
This research used quantitative research with an experimental design. In this research, the researcher used two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. According to this research, the sample research was from the class XI students SMAN 1 Jetis Ponorogo, namely class XI MIPA as the experimental class, comprises of 30 students with technic learning through pair work and class XI IPS as the control class comprises of 20 students with technic learning through group work. The researcher used the purposive sampling technic to decide the experimental class and the control class. The researcher used test data and documentation as data collection. The data were collected by given pre-tes in the first meeting and given the post-test in the last meeting. Afer collecting the data, the researcher analyze the data using t-test with SPSS.
The result of the research concluded that the experimental class average post-test score was 83.33, while the control class average post-test score was 56.50, and testing utilizing the t-test showed that the t-value was 7.797 with a meaning of 0.000. This value is lower than 0.005 or significant (p = 0.000 < 0.005). This indicates that the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. In other words, the results of the speaking ability of students those who are taught using the CLT approach and those who are not taught using the CLT approach have significant differences. Thus it can be concluded that the CLT approach can influences students speaking ability.
