Abstract

Yusuf, Alfin 2023. The Correlation between Reading Interest and Reading Comprehension of Eleventh Grade Students at MAN 1 Ponorogo. Thesis, English Language Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute of Ponorogo. Advisor Titin Susilowati, M. Pd.

Keyword: Reading Interest, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

In English or material related to language, of course there are several basic skills that must be mastered, namely reading, listening, writing and speaking. The difficulty that is often encountered and is considered trivial understands reading texts in reading material. Several determining factors are that students' interest in reading is relatively low and this can occur from internal or external factors of students.

Therefore, researchers want to know how students' interests can influence students' reading comprehension abilities. The aim of this research is to analyze whether there is a correlation between reading interest and reading comprehension of eleventh grade students at MAN 1 Ponorogo.

In this research, researchers used quantitative methods, with the dependent variable being reading comprehension and the independent variable being reading interest. The student population is 283 students who are divided into nine classes, each class consisting of 35-37 students. Sampling used simple random sampling so that the number of samples used by researchers was three classes, with a total of 59 students. The techniques used to collect data were questionnaires and tests. To analyze the data, researchers used Pearson product moment to analyze the data.

From calculations using the Pearson product moment formula, it is known that the correlation coefficient value between student interest and student reading comprehension is a correlation of 0.752018, while the value of r table 5% is 0.2564 and if compared with it shows r xy = 0.752018 > r table 5% 0.2564, so the researcher concludes that there is a positive correlation between the two variables and the value of 0.752018 is included in the category of strong correlation with intervals of 0.70 – 0.90.

From this research we know that there are factors that influence reading interest in the learning process. Indirectly, it will affect students' level of understanding, especially in reading material later. Even though reading skills are basic skills, attention must still be paid to ensure that reading hinders the learning process.
