Oktaviani, Intan, 2023. "Students's Errors of Simple Past Tense in Writing
Recount Texts at SMPN 3 Ponorogo". Thesis, English Language Teaching
Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic
Institute of Ponorogo, Advisor: Dr. Tintin Susilowati, S. S., M. Pd.
Key words: Past tense, writing, recount text
Writing is one of the four skills that students must master. In writing
subjects, foreign English learners may make mistakes in using the structure of the
target language. To analyze these errors, syntax error analysis is the right way.
Syntactic error analysis can be carried out to obtain information on general
difficulties faced by students in writing English sentences.
Regarding the research objectives, the researcher wants to knows (1) the
types of errors made by the students in using past tense in writing recount texts,
and (2) the factors that influence the students in making errors. To analyze the
problems above, researcher used Dullay's theory related to Surface Strategy
Taxonomy. This theory related to the learner's reconstruction of a new language.
This perspective highlights the ways in which surface structure is altered which in
turn removes, adds, misforms, and misorders.
The research was conducted using a descriptive-qualitative design. Data
collection was carried out by applying documentation of students' compositions in
written exams, and checking for errors found there. Researcher analyzed the data
using descriptive analysis techniques. The researcher listed, identified, and
described the errors.
The research results showed that (1) there are four types of errors found in
this research. Among them were 29 omission errors, 12 addition errors, 19
misformation errors, and 3 misordering errors, (2) Then the causes of students
making these mistakes include 10 sentences of communicative strategy, 11
sentences of interlingual transfer, 22 sentences of intralingual transfer, and 26
sentences of context of learning.
