Culture existences of various society or cultures within a specific region, country, or worldwide. Cultural diversity in English textbook aims to make students ready for globalisation and a multicultural orientation. A textbook is a set of instructional materials that contains of content and material that plays an important role in teaching and learning process. Selecting a material for the students has a big influence on the success of teaching. A textbook should encourage students to foster character values based on the goals of National Education System that in 2022 used the merdeka curriculum.
This thesis analysed about culture in English textbook entitled Pathway to English for tenth grade of senior high school merdeka curriculum edition that published by PT. Erlangga. Based on Cortazzy and Jill there are three types of culture there are source culture, target culture, and international culture. Besides that Kang Ming Yuen clarify cultural diversity based on elements of culture there are four elements product, practice, perspective, and person. The purpose of this study was to examine the relevant of culture in Merdeka curriculum.
The research applied library research approach, the data analysis technique used in this research is based on Miles and Huberman which is involving three steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The research collecting data through documentation focused on text, images, and audio from the textbook. The data is from textbook “Pathway to English” used in tenth grade from unit 1 to unit 6.
The study’s results revealed that the textbook “Pathways to English” encompasses culture, including types and elements of culture, the research find out the types of culture are 6 source cultures, 7 target cultures, and 22 international cultures. Among the elements of culture, it features 35 products, 23 practices, 4 perspectives, and 24 persons. The research findings demonstrate that the textbook “Pathway to English” Merdeka curriculum contains culture based on the Pancasila student’s profile.
