Abstract

RATNA, YUDHIESTA DEWI. 2023. The Effectiveness of Teaching English by Using
U-Dictionary Towards Students’ Pronunciation At The Eleventh Grade of SMAN 1 Karangjati Ngawi. Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute of Ponorogo. Advisor Wiwin Widyawati, M.Hum.

Key Words: Teaching Pronunciation, Pronunciation, and U-Dictionary Application
Language has four skills namely listening, reading, writing, and speaking. To evade misunderstanding between the speaker and the listener, mastering pronunciation is needed. Pronunciation is part of speaking skills good and correct vocabulary pronunciation determines speaking ability.
The research objective the researcher wants to find out any significant difference of score pronunciation skill between the students taught English pronunciation by using U-Dictionary and those who are not taught by using U-Dictionary.
This research used quantitative research with quasi-experimental design. In this research, the researcher used two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. The object research were from the eleventh graders SMAN 1 Karangjati Ngawi, namely class XI IPA 1 as the control class, consists of 32 students and class XI IPA 2 as the experimental class, consists of 32 students. The researcher used the random sampling technique to determine the experimental class and the control class. The researcher used test and documentation as data collection. The data were collected by given pre-test in the first meeting and given post-test in the last meeting. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data using t-test and effect size.
The result of the research show that there is significant difference of score pronunciation skill between students who are taught by using the U-Dictionary application and the students who are not taught by using the U-Dictionary application. The result show that the average post-test for the experimental class is 81,25, while the average post-tets for the control class is 74,19, and testing using t-test showed that the t-value is 0,122. This mean null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. So it can be concluded that the U-Dictionary application has high effect towards students’ pronunciation.
