Vocabulary mastery is the ability to understand and use words and meanings. Reading is the most important skill for everyone, because reading can add information and knowledge to what we read. Vocabulary or reading comprehension as one of the main tools in understanding recount text reading to gain knowledge and information from the abilities that students must have.
This study describes the problems in students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension using recount text. There are several problems in this study: Most of the students do not master the vocabulary in class so they do not understand the meaning of words in English., Besides that they also lack understanding of reading in student learning, students do not focus in the lesson. Students have little mastery of English. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is a relationship between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of class X students at SMAN 1 Sambit.
This study uses quantitative research with the dependent variable students' reading comprehension and independent vocabulary mastery variables XIPA 1 class students of SMAN 1 Sambit are 30 students, and X IPA 3 populations are taken as samples. Then the data collection technique is test and documentation. The researcher uses the product moment formula as an analytical procedure.
The result research showed that the means score of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension showed the highest score was 20 and the lowest score was 8. The total score of vocabulary mastery 464 with the mean is 32. Meanwhile, the total score of reading is 471 with the mean is 32,483.The calculation of vocabulary mastery (X) and reading comprehension (Y) show that rxy = 0,889 is high than rt = 0,3739 or rxy (0,889)>(0,374),it can be conclude that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So, there is correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery (X) and students’ reading comprehension (Y).
