Writing is a thinking process to find ideas and express good writing ideas and group ideas into statements and paragraphs. Writing difficulties occurred in natural conditions such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. A narrative text is a story used to inform, entertain, motivate, or teach the readers. A narrative is a text that tells a story or describes a past event from start to finish and serves a purpose for the readers.
The objectives of this thesis were to describe students’ difficulties in writing narrative text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo, to find out the factors that make students get difficulties in writing narrative text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo, and to know how the students overcome difficulties in writing narrative text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo.
This research applied the qualitative approach and used a case study as the research design. The research was conducted in tenth grade at SMAN 2 Ponorogo. The data for this study include students’ writing that has difficulty in the narrative text. The techniques of data collection cover used, interview, questionnaire, and documentation.
The results of this research were (1) The students’ difficulties in writing narrative text cover grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, punctuation, and layout. (2) The factors that cause students’ difficulties in writing narrative text include the lack of learners’ motivation, inadequate time, lack of practice, and teacher feedback. (3) In overcoming the students’ difficulties in writing narrative text, the teacher helps the students by picture sequences, and one day one English sentence, improves vocabulary mastery, practices daily use of everyday communication, and provides exercises. For example, quizzes, puzzles, charades, word definitions, scrabble, etc
