Abstract

Classroom interaction referred as any interaction or relationship that occurs
both verbally and nonverbally between a teacher and students or between students
themselves in the classroom. Classroom interaction encourages students to participate in the learning process. One of teachers’ strategies to engage and
encourage students’ participation is asking the questions to them. The ability to
manage questions is also known as the questioning strategy where teachers should
prepare good questions that will guide students' interest in responding.
The importance of the research aimed to discover the types of questioning
strategies that used by teachers during the English classroom interaction at SMAN
2 Ponorogo and to describe the reasons of the teachers in using their questioning
strategies during the English classroom interaction at SMAN 2 Ponorogo.
This research applied descriptive qualitative research that investigated
teachers’ questioning strategies during the English classroom interaction at
SMAN 2 Ponorogo. It was the most suitable one to analyze for this research
because the result was in a detailed description of the types of questioning
strategies. The researcher used observation, interview, and field notes in
collecting the data. Then, in analyzing the data the researcher used data reduction,
data display, and data verification.
The research found that there were 207 of types of questioning strategies
which used by the teachers during the English classroom interaction at SMAN 2
Ponorogo specifically in tenth and eleventh grade students such as reinforcement,
probing, adjust/refocus, simply repeated, rephrased, wait-time, and Bahasa.
Besides, there were 79 of types of question which used by the teachers during the
English classroom interaction at SMAN 2 Ponorogo specifically in tenth and
eleventh grade students included managerial, rhetorical, closed, and open
question. The last, the reasons of the teachers in using questioning strategies
during the English classroom interaction were to check the students’
comprehension and then guide the students to be more deeply in understanding the material. This study has shown that teachers’ questioning strategies are crucial
to successfully make students engaged in the classroom interaction, enhance
students’ responses, and lead to the comprehension of the lesson. Therefore, it is
suggested that teachers should be more aware of their questioning strategies to assist students achieve better proficiency in the English language.
