Abstract

ABSTRACT

MAHARSUCI, MAYASARI SILFIA. 2023. Students’ Speaking Anxiety in Practicing Dialogue at the Tenth Grades MA Muhammadiyah 2 Yanggong. Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute of Ponorogo. Advisor: Dr. Tintin Susilowati, M.Pd.

Speaking is considered an active or productive skill. There are many activities for purposeful speaking practice to developing foreign language speaking skills. One of them is through dialogue practice. However, most of students are anxious when they must participate in speaking activities includes in practicing dialogue.
There are 3 objectives in this research. First, the researcher wants to analyze what types of anxiety experienced by the tenth grade students of MA Muhammadiyah 2 Yanggong in practicing dialogue, what the factors that cause students’ speaking anxiety in practicing dialogue at the tenth grade students of MA Muhammadiyah 2 Yanggong, and what are the teacher’s strategies to overcome speaking anxiety in practicing dialogue at the tenth grade students MA Muhammadiyah 2 Yanggong.
The method that the researcher used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The data was collected trough observation, questionnaire, and interview. The subject of this research was the tenth the tenth grade students and the English teacher of MA Muhammadiyah 2 Yanggong. Then the data is analyzed used reduction, data display, and conclusion.
The results of this research are the researcher found that the type of anxiety experienced by students is state anxiety. Then, the researcher also found the highest factor that causes students' speaking anxiety when practicing dialogue are limited vocabulary, afraid of friends, and lack of motivation. Last.ly, the researcher found several strategies used by teachers to overcome students' speaking anxiety in practicing dialogue including creating a warm learning environment, involving students in various learning activities and using gadgets for learning
