English textbooks contain several dialogues using real-life language that student’s and teacher should understand before implementing it in real-life. What the speaker says in every dialogue in an English textbook can be classified as a speech act. This research focuses on illocutionary act in the dialogue of textbook to make students and teacher understand and know the intended meaning so they can react correctly and it can prevent misinterpretation of every utterance in every sentence dialog.
The aims of this research are 1) to classify the types of illocutionary acts of dialogue found in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh and eighth grades of Junior High School. 2) to identify the functions of illocutionary acts of dialogue found in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh and eighth grades of Junior High School. 3) to find out the most dominant type and function of illocutionary acts found in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh and eighth grades of Junior High School.
The researcher used qualitative research for the research approach and library research as the research design. The data source used the dialogues in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh and eighth grades of Junior High School. This research used documentary technique to collect the data and used content analysis to analyze data. This research adopted Searle’s theory to analyze the types and Leech’s theory to analyze the function of illocutionary acts.
The results of this research showed 1) there are four types of illocutionary act in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh and eighth grade with a total number of 193 utterances and 221 utterances contained by assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. 2) there are two functions of illocutionary act found in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh grade, with a total number of 122 utterances contained by convivial and collaborative. There are four functions of the illocutionary act found in the student’s textbook “English for Nusantara” for the eighth grade, with a total number of 113 utterances contained by competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflict. 3) The most dominant types in student’s textbook for the seventh and eighth grades is assertive with total number (44%) and (40%). The most dominant functions in student’s textbook for the seventh and eighth grades is collaborative with total number (61%) and (53,1%). Based on the result of the most dominant type and function, pedagogical implications of curriculum achievements for students by learning the dialogue in student’s textbook for the seventh and eighth grades of junior high school, namely: communicative competence in English with various multimodal texts (oral, written, visual, and audio-visuals), and critical and creative reasoning skills.
