Idiom is a phrase where the words together have a meaning that is different from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. Idiomatic expressions are very necessary and important part of the language learning process, likewise, a lot of daily speech is based on idioms. In this way, the learners will become more fluent in English and will be able to communicate better. The phenomena of idiomatic expression are not only in real life conversation but also in the movie.
This study aims to identify types of idioms and to describe the meaning of idiom found in “Toy Story 3” film script. The primary source of the data is the movie and secondary source data is the file of the script and also information from internet. The theory used in this research is from Makkai’s theory.
The researcher applied a descriptive qualitative design. In collecting the data, the researcher used some steps, they were: downloading the movie, watching the movie, looking for the movie script and identifying the sentences of the movie based on Makkai’s theory. Then, in analyzing the data, the researcher used some steps, they were: putting the information in order by gathering all of the information from the script that contains an idiom, analyzing the data which consist six types of idiom, then presenting the data into each types of idiom.
The results of the research show that kinds of idiomatic expressions are found, phrasal verb idiom is 10 utterances or 25%, tournure idiom is 11 utterances or 27%, irreversible binominal idiom is 4 utterances or 10%, phrasal compound idiom is 7 utterances or 18%, and incorporating verb idiom is 8 utterances or 20%. Meanwhile, the meaning of idiomatic expression are found, conceptual meaning is 3 utterances or 27%, affective meaning is 7 utterances or 64%, and reflected meaning is 1 time or 9%.
