Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) to students with disabilities is different from teaching regular students. Teachers can apply different strategies or techniques to teach students with disabilities especially during pandemic. Researchers was interested in analyzing the strategies applied by teachers in the teaching and learning process in inclusive classroom.
The purpose of this study was to determine the teacher's strategy in teaching English in the inclusive class of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the 2021/2022 academic year. To find out what strategies teachers use in teaching English in inclusive classrooms during the pandemic; The researcher formulates the problem formulation into: (1)What are the strategies of the English teacher in the learning process during the pandemic inclusive class at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo? (2)What are the assessment systems used during the pandemic inclusive class at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo? (3)What are the problems and solutions in the learning process during the pandemic inclusive class at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo?
This research uses a qualitative approach and uses a case study design. Data collection techniques are interviews, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification.
The result of this research revealed that (1) The English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo applies several strategies in teaching English in inclusive class X IPS 2, there are arranging student seats, providing good explanations and teaching models, approaching and giving more attention, and mentoring from regular students. (2)There are 3 assessment systems taken in the inclusion class of English lessons, they are: Affective assessment, Cognitive assessment and Psychomotor assessment. (3)The problems faced by teachers when teaching inclusive classes during the pandemic are: a) Lack of time during learning, due to a reduction in learning time of 15 minutes during the pandemic. the solution is maximize time for instructional activities in delivering material. b)There is no training for teachers who teach in inclusive classes. So, Teachers must prepare and adapt to teaching strategies in inclusive classrooms during the pandemic, and also teachers who teach in classes also ask for directions from Special Assistant Teachers for Inclusive students.
