Teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia has its own challenge. The teacher should know their duties to create effective teaching and learning process. Teachers who teach in a boring way can make students less interested in the lesson. The teacher must be able to find appropriate and varied teaching methods in learning English to increase students’ activities in learning. To avoid boredom when learning English, teachers can apply a quite relevant method that is not only teacher-centered, namely the edutainment method. Edutainment is method that uses a fun way of learning, which tries to make students comfortable when learning. The edutainment method aims to support education with entertainment, regardless of the main goal.
The objectives of this thesis were, to describe the implementation of the edutainment method in teaching English at Mr. Fast English College Sidoarjo, to explain the students’ responses toward the implementation of the edutainment method in teaching English at Mr. Fast English College Sidoarjo, and to know the teachers’ perceptions to the implementation of edutainment method in teaching English at Mr. Fast English College Sidoarjo.
This research applied the qualitative approach and used descriptive qualitative as the research design. The research was conducted at first level Junior High School at Mr. Fast English College located in Taman, Sepanjang, Sidoarjo, East Java. The technique of collecting the data used, observation, interview, documentation and questionnaire. The researcher analyzed the data by data reduction, data display, and conclusion and verification data.
The results of this research were (1) the implementation of edutainment method in teaching English is effective and well implemented. The teacher provides material by playing games, giving point cards, and also singing together. The games can increase students’ understanding related to the material, singing can relax the students and not get bored. Besides point card can motivate the students (2) the students’ responses were very positive. Students were very active and excited about the teaching-learning process. Besides, students’ interview and questionnaire showed that students really enjoy learning with the edutainment method, and can increase students’ interest in learning English (3) the teachers explained that using edutainment method in teaching English can increase students’ interest to the lesson. Playing games can reduce boredom to the students. The teachers also said applying an edutainment method is the right way or students to learn with fun. Overall, the researcher concluded that edutainment method in teaching English is well implemented and was applied positively for teaching English.
