Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted various fields, without exception in the field of education. This situation causes the change in learning that is usually carried out face-to-face in the classroom to be carried out at home, namely online learning. This is certainly a new challenge for teachers and students in carrying out the teaching and learning process through the online system. The implementation of online learning certainly causes various problems or problems that occur during the teaching and learning process, especially in English subjects.
This research has objective to find out the problems of English online learning encountered by the students at MA Ma'arif Al Mukarrom Kauman Ponorogo and how the students solve their problems with English online learning.
This research applied a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative design. It was conducted for the XI IPA grade students of MA Ma'arif Al Mukarrom Kauman Ponorogo academic year 2021/2022. The data were collected by observation, interview, and documentation. The researcher used interview and observation to discover the problems of learning English online experienced by students. Meanwhile, to describe the problem, the researcher conducted online observations by joining the WhatsApp Group as a non-participant observer and conducted interviews with class XI science students and English teachers. The data analysis technique uses the theory of Miles and Huberman, there are three steps of data analysis techniques: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions and verification.
This research showed that the English online learning encountered by the student in class XI at MA Ma'arif Al Mukarrom Kauman Ponorogo is divided into two, namely, internal problems and external problems. Internal problems experienced by students include students' lack of understanding when learning English online, which affects students' motivation and enthusiasm for learning as well as weak learning concentration because students tend to find it difficult to concentrate when studying online. Furthermore, external problems include problems with online learning facilities, the media used, and environmental factors. Then from interviews conducted by researchers with students, several solutions were found to overcome these problems: study independently, look for additional material on the internet, reread material that is difficult to understand, and find a comfortable and easy place to study and find access the internet.
