Abstract
People communicate with others by using language. People often put suitable language depending on the situation/ place where they share. The area where people are gathering/ living in one place also influences what language they use. One of the places where people live and meet others all day is the Islamic Boarding School. People in Islamic Boarding School consist of various groups, ethnicities, and cultures, so they use the language from their region in their daily activities. It also happened among Students in Islamic Boarding School Ponorogo. Because of these phenomena, the researcher analyzed and investigated those languages as the language variation in Islamic Boarding School Al- Barokah Ponorogo.
The importance of the research is aimed to enhance students' and teachers' knowledge about kind of language variation. It can raise language awareness among teachers and students in Islamic Boarding schools. Besides, it also tells the factor that can influence language variation. It is hoped to minimize misconceptions or deviations created from the language variation teacher, and students use in the appropriate daily conversation, especially in the nonformal situation and under several different conditions.
The researcher used a descriptive qualitative design to analyze the subject. Qualitative research is an approach to explore and understand the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem. It is the most suitable One to analyze and appropriate for this research because it results in a detailed description of language variation. Qualitative research refers in the broadest sense to research that produces descriptive data. The phenomena of language variation found in Islamic Boarding School Al- Barokah needs to be investigated in the description.
The language variation found in Islamic Boarding School Al- Barokah is dialect. Dialect is the language that some people in one place use. Besides, there are two kinds of language variations found. Those are in Javanese Vocabularies and Islamic Boarding School Vocabulary. The researcher found 18 Javanese vocabularies and 28 Islamic Boarding School vocabularies. Some factors also cause language variation. In Islamic Boarding School Al- Barokah Ponorogo, the researcher found two factors that influence the language variation used by teachers and students. Those are region and education background.
