Abstract

ABSTRAK
Ananda,Herwin Tri. In 2013, the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) implemented a policy requiring elementary and secondary schools to implement the Curriculum 2013. It highlights the importance of developing national character in younger generations by integrating character education into the development of knowledge and student skills in the teaching and learning activities and learning materials. One of the supporting requirements is the textbook. The materials presented in the textbooks are supposed to give an impact on students’ characters. A textbook should encourage students to foster character values based on the goals of National Education System.

The purposes of this study are to analyze: 1) the types of character education values presented in the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris; and 2) the dominant type of character education values in the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris. The researcher only focuses on analyzing the reading texts and dialogues in the first semester of the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for tenth graders of senior high school as the limitation of the research.

The research design used in this study is a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used documentation techniques to collect the data. There are 11 data in the form of reading texts and dialogues analyzed by the researcher. This research is categorized into library research because the data of this research are collected through reading the content of the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris. The data are then analyzed using the “bottom-up” approach proposed by John W. Creswell’s theory.

The results of this research show that: 1) there are 16 character education values in the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris. Those values are religious, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, independent, democratic, curiosity, the spirit of nationality, patriotism, achievement appreciation, friendly/communicative, peacefulness, reading interest, environmental awareness, and responsibility; 2) the dominant type of character education values in the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris is friendly/communicative value. The values that are not found in all reading texts and dialogues of the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris are honesty and social awareness values.
