Figurative language or figure of speech is form of expression used to convey
meaning or heighten effect, often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning. People use figurative language to make the phrases or sentences more meaningful. Figurative language is a part of learning that cannot separate. It is included in the curriculum language, especially English in senior high school class XI in first semester. The students can learn figurative language from short movie and learn the ethics of the movie. Movie is the most popular form of entertainment and educational media. The movie can affect the viewers or audiences in any part, such as culture, performance, ethics, language, vocabulary, idiom, and so on. Selective in movie for children/students is a must. Movies have a big influence, especially on the ethics that are shown.
The objectives of this study were; to analyze the type of figurative languages used in “The Wild Swans”, “The Snow Queen” and “The Fir Tree” English Fairy Tales Short Movies, to find out the dominant figurative language used in “The Wild Swans”, “The Snow Queen” and “The Fir Tree” English Fairy Tales Short Movies, and to know the ethics used in “The Wild Swans”, “The Snow Queen” and “The Fir Tree” English Fairy Tales Short Movies.
This research was library research. It applied qualitative descriptive approach and used content analysis to analyze the data. This research used “The Wild Swans”, “The
Snow Queen” and “The Fir Tree” short movies. They were taken from YouTube channel “English Fairy Tales”. In analyzed figurative language, the researcher used Baldick theory and supported by J.A Cuddon, and M.H Abrams. Besides analyzing figurative language, the researcher also analyzed the ethics of the movies based on Indonesian Censorship Film Board.
The results of the research showed that the researcher found 4 types in 27 data of
figurative language from The Wild Swans, The Snow Queen and The Fir Tree short
movie by English Fairy Tales. They were: personification 15 data (56%), simile 7 data (26%), metaphor 3 data (11%), hyperbole 2 data (7%). Therefore, it can be concluded that the most dominant type of figurative language from the movies is personification.
The researcher also found good ethics in the movies based on Indonesian Censorship
Film Board. So, the movies analyzed have variety collections of figurative languages to be learned by students. The ethics of the movies is also good and suitable to be a media of teaching and learning.
