Visionary leadership in an educational institution is important to bring educational institutions to be better in the future. Principals who lead with visionary characters will have a strong vision and high work motivation. So that it can create an environment that has high motivation and morale in an educational institution. The right leadership character is also one of the solutions to the problem of the quality of education in educational institutions. Educational institutions with good quality will be a strong attraction for an educational institution to be able to continue to survive in an era of education that continues to experience rapid development and change. Every educational institution competes with each other to improve the quality of education in their schools. Schools are considered to have a good reputation if they have good quality. One of the factors that can influence whether or not it is aleadership model that has a vision. Leaders who have a clear vision and look to the future. A leader who has a vision has the role of a direction setter, change agent, spokesperson, and coach.
The quality of education in an educational institution is a quality that cannot be ignored. To achieve good quality in an organization, a strong and visionary leadership is needed and has a strong commitment. Leaders who have visionary leadership characters, especially school principals, will find it easier to determine the direction of the institution they lead and can focus on bringing educational institutions. An ideal and direction of an educational institution that is stated in the school’s vison and mission. With this character, the principal and all stakeholders in the school can work together and become a solid team to realize the school’s vision.
The research location under study is SMPN 1 Takeran Magetan. The reason for choosing this location is because the school is a public school that adopts the boarding school system. This includes attitude competence, habituation, and character planting in students so that they have akhlaqul karimah character when they graduate. In addition, the competence of skills and knowledge is also very important.
This research uses a qualitative approach with the type of case study, in terms of data collection using interviews, observation, and documentation. So that this research has that the following results: (1) the principal as a strategist in improving the quality of education provides policies that are focused on planning, quality control, and performance improvement in achieving good quality education. (2) the principal acts as a direction setter, agent of change, spokesperson, and coach. (3) the impact of visionary leadership embodied in success and its supporting factors. All of these are the principal’s efforts to improve the quality of education at SMPN 1 Takeran Magetan.
