Reading comprehension is a set of skills that involves interaction between the writer and the readers. It is a process of making sense and deriving meaning from printed words. There are various methods, techniques, and strategies to comprehend text. One of them is K-W-L and data Chart strategies. It requires students to use and develop their metacognitive thinking skills. The strategies build the students’ background knowledge, critical thinking skill, and organizing skill.
The purpose of this research is to examine whether there was a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievement between students who are taught using K-W-L and Data Chart strategies and those who are not taught using them. This research applied a quantitative approach and used the quasi-experimental research design. The populations of this research were the eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 1 Pangkalan Lada. The sample were 46 students, which were chosen through simple random sampling. It was classified into two classes, and it was an experimental and controlled class.
The technique of data collection were documentation, pre-test and post-test. The data were collected from documentation, pre-test and post-test. The documentation is used to document the learning activites. The pre-test is given before the treatment, and the post-test is given after the treatment. The data collected were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the research showed that the mean score of the experimental class and controlled class were 78.88 and 69.33, respectively. It means the experimental class’ score was higher than the controlled class’ score.
The result of the T-test calculation showed that the value of ttest was higher than the ttable. The value of ttest was 3.260, while the value of ttable was 2.01 (3.260 > 2.01). Thus, it can be concluded that the Ha is accepted and the Ho is rejected. It implied that there is a significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievement who are taught by using K-W-L and data Chart strategies and students who aren’t taught by using K-W-L and data Chart strategies. Therefore, the K-W-L and data Chart strategies are effective for teaching reading comprehension procedure text at the eleventh-grade of SMK Negeri 1 Pangkalan Lada.
