Reading is a central activity that inherent to all levels of students, especially in studying the meaning on text. Because, from the reading all information can be found. But in practice students had difficulty on studying the meaning from the text. PORPE is a strategy of active and independent learning for comprehending and studying a text. The purpose of this research was conducted to know whether the students who are taught by using PORPE strategy get better score in Narrative text than students who aren’t taught by using PORPE strategy at the eight grade of SMPN 3 Bandar Pacitan.
This research applied quantitative approach and used quasi experimental design. The technique of data collection were test and documentation. To analyze data, the researcher used t-test formula by using SPSS version 21 to know there was significance difference on students’ reading comprehension who are taught by using PORPE strategy and students’ who are not taught.
Based on the result of this research, it showed that the PORPE is effective strategy to improving students’ reading comprehension. Based on the t-test result that shows the t-test value 7,095 and the t-table 1,678 (7,095 > 1,678) with degree of freedom (df) N= 47. According to the formula if t-test value > t-table so the result of t-test indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Hα) was accepted while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected.
From the result above, the researcher conclude that “PORPE” is an effective strategy for teaching reading to the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Bandar Pacitan in academic year 2020/2021.
