In teaching and learning foreign language especially English for foreign language (EFL), the teacher must choose suitable stategy, media or technique. Each skill of English needs its own strategy and media to make the learners comprehend the material well. Not all of those skills are liked by the learners, usually there is a skill feels difficult to be learned. One of those is writing. In SMPN 4 Ponorogo more than using lecture method, the teacher prefered to use creative media such as game and realia or real object in teaching and learning process especially in writing. In this study the reasearcher was interested to focus in realia. It was caused by the different realia applied in this school and realia was applied in each material of English Language Teaching especially in eighth grade. In the use of realia, the teacher also invites the learners to understand english language naturally by applying Total Pshycal Response (TPR). This research was conducted for several purposes. They are: 1) To find how the implementation of realia and Total Pshycal Response (TPR) in teaching writing at SMPN 4 Ponorogo is. 2) To find How students’ response through the implementation of Realia and Total Pshycal Response (TPR) in Teaching Writing at SMPN 4 Ponorogo is.
The object and the source of this study was the students of the eight E grade of SMPN 4 Ponorogo. The researcher choose this class due to the “special” characteristic of the students inside. In addition, the researcher also aimed the English teacher as a source of this study.
Qualitative research was conducted by applying case study research method. In this research, the researcher analyzed the data through data reduction, data display, and conclusion and verifications data. It is a methodological on data analysis which involved an interview both the English teacher and the students, an observation during activity in teaching-learning process, and a documentation which supported a valid data.
The finding clarified that: first, the implementation of realia and Total Pshycal Response in teaching writing was a different and unique strategy found. When commonly realia is applied by bringing something in the classroom for supporting the material, in this school the teacher carried the students go out the clasroom to recognize real things around the school related to the material. In giving instruction especially when instructed the students doing realia, the teacher always used English. But, when there were 50% of the students seemed could not get the material, the students would translated the instruction each sentence. Second, the students’ response was very positive. It showed when the researcher looked the students were very active during doing the assignments. In the end, the researcher concluded that realia and TPR applied positively in increasing students’ writing ability. Through this strategy, both the teacher and the students can achieve the goal of teaching-learning process.
